On My Radar
These past months, looming work deadlines and anxieties about the future have somehow managed to put my personal life on hold – though I did manage to squeeze in a (working) trip to the UK in February. While I now attempt to ease myself back into my Berlin freelancer routine, it is all the more important to reflect on said trip, as well as acquiring that spring cleaning attitude that breathes some new life into the winter monotony. For now, here are a few things that have made me happy this past week and will continue to do so for the remainder of the month.
Month of Road Trips
As you might have already guessed from my Instagram feed, I spent the past couple of weeks in the UK. This time, instead of opting for the usual mode of transportation, flying, we decided to drive over (which is partly due to the fact that we cannot take our dog with us on planes). My grandad was so kind as to lend us his car, and so February was indeed full of road trips – from making a ten hour drive to pick up the car and excursions around Berlin, to the actual main trip over to the UK and trips to the seaside. And what a precious time it was! I will share some photos of the trip soon, I'm still in the process of editing them all. The picture on the left was taken at Cuckmere Haven by the Seven Sister and was shot on Kodak Portra 160 film with my Canon 3. What I'd give to have this beautiful place on my doorstep!
UK Beauty Additions
Last year, low funds and a vast collection of beauty product forced me to use up everything in my cupboards and streamline my beauty possessions. While I did struggle at first, this process taught me to buy only necessities and made me realise which products truly work for me. My visit to the UK has been an incredible enabler for all the beauty items I've been dreaming of for the past six months. I am thinking of doing a bigger beauty post soon, but here are five new additions worth mentioning:
- Sunday Riley U.F.O. Clarifying Face Oil – having struggled with uneven skin and more than a few breakouts lately, this oil has made a huge difference in a manner of days.
- Hourglass Seamless Finish Foundation Stick – perfect for my oily skin, especially on the go!
- Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo – the days of matte lipsticks have finally passed. I purchased Dreamer and Liberator and am currently especially fond of Dreamer's peachy hues.
- Hourglass Ambient Strobe Lighting Blush Palette – ok, I know this palette is by no means a necessity but I do find that all shades pack a punch.
- Super Facialist Vitamin C Cleansing Oil – now this has been one of my holy grail products for the past three years, so it goes without saying that I had to repurchase this in the UK.
The year started off with such good intentions – in January, I was full of plans for reading a book every week and now, two months later, reality has set in and I am faced with an ever-growing book pile and no time and headspace to read them all. However, I finally finished Zadie Smith's Swing Time a few weeks ago (which gets five stars from me) and have just concluded reading Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah, which is so powerful and well written! I'm thinking of doing a little reading list post sometime soon, when work is less stressful and I actually have some free time to read, write and take photos.
Have I actually introduced our dog on here? I don't think so, so let me introduce Freya, an 11 month old Beagle puppy, who loves food, snuggles and more food. When we decided to get a dog over a year ago, I don't think either Rob or myself could have known how much joy she would bring to our daily lives. Seeing how excited she gets every time she sees us is so precious, neither of us can imagine a life without her now. Though the first two months were a challenge – toilet training isn't easy guys, especially not when it involves getting up every two hours in the night to take her outside – we now have a really well behaved and lovely dog who adores us and just about anyone else she meets. Going for long walks in Berlin and its surroundings is so much more fun with Freya in tow.
