Muck, Floral & General
If there is one dream I've had for a long time, it's to one day own a café and shop. Although I'm well versed in the retail business and know how much time and effort goes into such a feat – contrasting how little monetary rewards it actually reaps – I can't help but dream of a place where delicious food is served, good books and magazines are there for the taking and ready to be delved into and a selection of local and international handcrafted items are both in use and for sale. Perhaps this yearning for a physical shop is due to my very much virtual occupation.
So having revealed revealed my innermost yearnings to you, it may come as no surprise that I'm very much into Auckland's latest retail addition. Muck, Floral & General store by the talented Carter Were and Sophie Wolanski may just be my dreams 'solidified'. Situated in Auckland's Grey Linn district, the store features beautiful floristry by Sophie of Muck, who creates bouquets and flower arrangements using local and often foraged plants, and sprouted breads by Carter of Were Bros. As if that wasn't enough, the girls also sell fresh coffee and locals' handcrafted items, such as ceramics and knitted kitchen towels.
With a backdrop of coral-coloured walls and simple timeless shelves, the girls manage to shine some light on the simple things that really matter: Good food, plants and well-designed objects.
Now, you might ask yourself why I am writing about this shop in particular. After all, I am based in Berlin and have no connection to Auckland, let alone New Zealand, whatsoever. But isn't it natural for us to yearn after something that is so very different to what we have?! Having lived in Europe my whole life, the thought of living in a hot climate like New Zealand and being surrounded by breathtaking nature and like-minded creatives delights me. Despite the outrageous overuse of the phrase caring is sharing, I cannot help but feel it applies to this situation perfectly.
Muck, Floral & General Store is located at 480 Richmond Road in West Lynn, Auckland.
Thank you Sophie, Carter & Harriet for answering some of my questions and sending me these beautiful images of your shop!
