2016 – Inspirations & Resolutions
Following on from my review of 2015 [→ read it here if you haven't already ←] it's about time to stop looking backwards and focus on the new year. Therefore let's discuss my inspirations and resolutions for 2016 – I know what you're thinking, but don't worry: I won't be making any outrageous claims or try to tell you how to change your life here. Instead, expect some visual and written inspiration.
Yes, we'd all like to do no wrong when it comes to fashion. But being subconsciously influenced by ever-changing fashion styles makes these aspirations almost impossible at times. The term 'capsule wardrobe' has been proclaimed by many bloggers the last year and, although I'm still more than a little skeptical about the longevity of such bold claims, I have to admit that a capsule wardrobe might actually be the solution to many of our problems. Once we put aside our need for the latest trends and really think about what pieces of clothing we actually need, a capsule wardrobe could be the be-all and end-all.
So how can I invest my money in a thoughtful and sustainable manner? This year, I would like to target small fashion brands. By buying pieces that will slot into my already existent wardrobe, I not only support them with my purchases, but over time also create a wardrobe full of items that are durable and, most importantly, wearable.
Firstly there is Base Range, a small underwear brand that has slowly but steadily evolved into an exciting fashion brand, supporting local businesses in Portugal, France and Turkey and using natural fibres and dyes to create beautiful pieces. I already own some of their underwear and even though it's not the cheapest, it's lasted me really well and the feeling of supporting such a small and exciting label is priceless. This year, I want to test some of their bigger fashion pieces [I currently have my eye on their silver silk t-shirt and silk shirt].
Next up is Paloma Wool, who I introduced on the blog last May [→ read the blog post again ←]. Run by Barcelona-based Paloma Lanna (who's in charge of everything, including the beautiful campaign photos), Paloma Wool produces all of their garments in Barcelona.
If there's one thing I miss from my uni days (apart from the nights out and the days spent with my friends), it's doing my own illustrations. Apart from drawing the odd Christmas or birthday card, I hardly ever get to draw these days. I'd like to start taking a sketchbook with me and, without feeling too precious, draw my surroundings. Now that I don't have to rely on the quality of my illustrations anymore, I might actually enjoy doing them much more.
I love taking photographs and taking trips to places like Morocco were a great opportunity to hone my skills. I've always loved analogue photography, so this year I intend to take my latest addition to my camera collection (a lovely Contax 137 MA Quartz) with me wherever I go. After all, you never know when that perfect photo moment happens. In order to save some money and be more organised, I am currently looking at investing in a good photo scanner and an external hard-drive.
Going a step further I would also like to think about how to best present my images. Occasionally sharing photos on here won't stop, but I'd like to work on a photo book and think more about composition this year.
On a side-note: I've recently been sifting through my grandparents' old slides and would love nothing more than to delve into some research. My father's parents lived in India and South Africa for quite some time and my mother's father was an Olympic athlete and travelled the world. Both families have an extensive collection of beautiful photographs that ought to be arranged into a book.
What are your inspirations and resolutions for the year 2016?
